## Installing AEROFLEX Breathe-EZ® PSA Duct Liner Without Pins
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/installing-aeroflex-breathe-ez-psa-duct-liner-without-pins/
Most duct liner specifications require that duct liner be mechanically fastened (pinned) to the sheet
metal duct with weld pins. Pinning, which is in addition to the application of wet-applied or PSA
adhesives to bond the insulation to the inside of the ductwork, fulfills the requirements of SMACNA’s
Duct Construction Standard.
Duct insulation manufacturers typically report “air erosion” testing up to 10,000 fpm and reference
ASTM C1071 and/or UL181. The test method requires subjecting the insulation to air velocities at a
rate 2.5 times the manufacturer’s published maximum fpm. For example, 4,000 fpm continuous x
2.5 = 10,000 fpm test velocity.
When mechanical fastening is not a project requirement, AEROFLEX Breathe-EZ Duct Insulation
with PSA can be installed as a duct liner without pins when expected air velocities will not exceed
4,000 feet per minute (fpm, continuous)....

## The Importance of AC Return Line Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/ac-return-line-insulation-aeroflex/
AC return line insulation is a critical component of HVAC systems which utilize piping to transfer cool/cold and warm/hot fluids and ultimately deliver conditioned air to a building’s occupant spaces. The right AC return line insulation saves energy by preventing heat gain to the refrigerants, controls condensation, protects the piping from corrosion, and provides personnel protection when required.
The cool/cold line is known as the suction line or ac return line. It conveys fluids, such as refrigerants, at temperatures of about 40°F . The liquid line conveys warm/hot fluids at about 110°F . Finally, the discharge line is typically very hot and operates at about 150°F .
AC return lines should always be insulated with the appropriate AC return line insulation when their operating temperatures are below the ambient temperature to prevent condensation and heat gain to the refrigerant....

## About Ductile Iron Pipe
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/about-ductile-iron-pipe/
We are occasionally asked what AEROFLEX® closed-cell elastomeric pipe sizes fit ductile iron pipe.
Ductile iron pipe differs from standard carbon steel pipe in that it is less susceptible to cracking or breaking under stress. Unlike carbon steel, ductile iron contains graphite which provides it with flexibility when subjected to stress. Ductile iron is also corrosion-resistant when in contact with corrosive soils.
Common specifications and applications for ductile pipe are for municipal water mains, wastewater mains, fire protection mains, and industrial pressure systems where pipe failures can be catastrophic. Applications are usually direct buried below grade in a trench.
The outside diameters of ductile pipe differ from carbon steel (IPS) OD's. Below is a typical ductile pipe OD schedule for the "standard pressure class".
While the 3" and 4" ductile pipe sizes can be insulated with our 4-1/8" and 5-1/8" ID tubes, the insulation may fit slightly loose on the pipe....

## Insulation That Prevents Moisture and Mold on Pipes and Ducts
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/insulation-that-prevents-moisture-and-mold-on-pipes-and-ducts/
Molds belong to the fungi kingdom, and unlike plants, they lack chlorophyll and must survive by digesting plants and other organic materials. Molds generate tiny spores to reproduce, and these spores are ever-present in both indoor and outdoor air currents. When mold spores land on a damp or wet surface, they begin to grow and reproduce from the organic food (i.e. dust, dirt, etc.) and moisture on the material’s surface.
It has been well documented that mold growth causes toxic risks to human health such as headaches, breathing difficulties, allergic and irritant reactions, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and opportunistic infections. It’s safe to presume that all building owners want to maintain a mold-free facility.
Mechanical insulation, the type that insulates building mechanical systems such as pipes, ducts and equipment, is subject to mold growth when not properly protected and maintained....

## AEROFLEX® and MRI Quench Piping
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/aeroflex-and-mri-quench-piping/
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning machines are employed in the healthcare field for disease detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of treatment.
Major MRI machine manufacturers, such as GE, Siemens, Canon, Hitachi, and Philips, use cryogens to cool magnets in MR scanners. Cryogenic gases, such as helium, are designed to be safely vented out of the building safely through stainless steel piping also known as "quench" pipes.
A quench is a short rapid burst of super cold air directed through the pipe to the outdoors. Since helium gas can reach temperatures as cold as -451oF , uninsulated bare piping can freeze and burn human tissue within seconds when accidental contact is made. For this reason, project engineers specify insulation to be installed on cryogen vent piping for personnel protection....

## Insulation Adhesives and Austenitic Stainless Steel
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/insulation-adhesives-and-austenitic-stainless-steel/
Austenitic stainless steel is often specified for high-performance industrial applications. Like other metallic piping types, such as copper and iron, stainless steel is susceptible to a type of corrosion known as external stress corrosion cracking (ESCC). With system cycling temperatures in the 140°F to 250°F range, the lower temperatures can generate moisture and the upper temperatures accelerate the corrosion process when corrosive ions are present.
One of the greatest threats, sources of system failure and maintenance/replacement costs to mechanical systems is corrosion to the metallic surfaces of piping and equipment. For corrosion to occur, three (3) elements are required: metal, air (oxygen) and water (electrolyte). Since metal and air are constant, the contributing factor to corrosion is the introduction of moisture. The corrosion process is accelerated with an insulated system when moisture becomes trapped between the insulation and metallic surface....

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) can result from improper insulation thickness. Other related factors include energy efficiency, mold prevention, protection of surrounding surfaces and equipment from water damage, and fall prevention for building occupants.
While national energy codes specify minimum pipe insulation thicknesses, calculations should be run for applications whenever there is the potential for condensation to develop on below-ambient systems.
To perform an insulation thickness calculation for condensation control, the following inputs are required:
• Insulation type
• Pipe size(s)
• Pipe type (copper, steel, stainless steel, PVC)
• Operating temperature (lowest in range)
• Ambient temperature (average annual high)

## How To Calculate R Value from Thermal Conductivity (K Value)
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/calculation-of-r-value/
Thermal insulation for commercial and industrial mechanical systems (piping, ducts & equipment), also known as mechanical insulation, serves to reduce heat transfer between one surface and another or a surface and the environment.
Selecting the proper mechanical insulation begins with understanding its thermal performance. Two of the most commonly referenced properties are thermal conductivity (K value) and R value . While thermal conductivity measures how readily heat passes through a material, R-value measures the material's resistance to heat flow or thermal resistance.
Understanding the relationship between these two values allows engineers, specifiers, contractors, and facility owners to compare insulation materials, estimate thermal performance, and specify the appropriate insulation thickness for mechanical systems.

## EPDM Versus NBR/PVC Closed Cell Elastomeric Insulation - What You Need to Know
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/epdm-versus-nbr-pvc-closed-cell-elastomeric-insulation/
Closed cell elastomeric insulation, also known as rubber, has been commercially available for almost 70 years. It’s commonly specified to insulate below-ambient (cold) mechanical systems such as HVAC, VRF/VRV, refrigeration, chilled water, medical gas, and cold water plumbing piping.
The original formulation, and the vast majority of closed cell elastomeric insulation available today, is known as NBR/PVC (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber/Polyvinyl Chloride). A newer technology is known as EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) insulation.
This post will break down and illustrate the primary differences, advantages, and disadvantages of these two types of closed cell elastomeric insulation.
### Chemical Polarity
At the most basic (molecular) level, all closed cell elastomeric insulation products are either “polar” or “nonpolar". Unfortunately, this information is usually not available on manufacturer technical data sheets and websites.

## Maintenance Tips for HVAC Refrigerant Pipe (Line) Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/maintenance-tips-for-hvac-refrigerant-line-insulation/
Through past industry energy audits, it’s been proven that mechanical insulation delivers a typical return on investment (ROI) to building owners within 6 months. However, the National Insulation Association (NIA) estimates that 10%-30% of mechanical insulation is damaged or missing on the piping, ductwork, and equipment where it was installed.
Damaged or missing insulation will extend the ROI and open up building mechanical systems to performance inefficiencies and system damage such as energy loss, condensation build-up, icing, corrosion under insulation, and the potential for eventual system failure and costly shut-downs.
HVAC refrigerant line insulation, also known as line insulation, is designed to last the life of the mechanical system that it insulates, provided that it is installed properly and consistently maintained....

## Considerations to Prevent External Stress Corrosion Cracking with Austenitic Stainless Steel
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/considerations-to-prevent-external-stress-corrosion-cracking-with-austenitic-stainless-steel/
The corrosion process is accelerated with an insulated system when moisture becomes trapped between the insulation and metallic surface. This condition is known as corrosion under insulation (CUI)...

## The Purpose of Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/the-purpose-of-pipe-insulation/
The evolution of thermal insulation dates back to prehistoric times when people gathered natural materials to insulate their shelters and clothing. It was not until the industrial revolution of the early 20th century that artificial thermal insulation materials, like pipe insulation, were developed due to their favorable durability, fire and water resistance.
The term insulate means to prevent the passage of heat, electricity, or sound by surrounding the area of concern with a non-conductive material. Thermal insulation prevents the transfer of heat because it is not a good conductor (non-conductive).
There are many other technical aspects about the performance characteristics of thermal insulation, however, this post will focus on the purpose, reasons to insulate pipes, and insulation material selection....

## Is Closed Cell Foam Insulation Waterproof?
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/is-closed-cell-foam-insulation-waterproof/
Closed cell foam insulation is known for its resistance to moisture, however is it waterproof? This post will explain the performance benefits of closed-cell insulation, specifically flexible elastomeric closed cell foam insulation, for insulating piping, ductwork, and equipment.
The dictionary definition of waterproof is “impervious to water”. Impervious is defined as “not allowing entrance of passage”; in this case, water.
When mechanical insulation is installed on below-ambient (cold) surfaces such as metallic piping (copper, aluminium, iron, stainless steel), ductwork, and equipment, a primary purpose of the insulation is to control condensation which can form on the insulation surface. Ultimately, a critical factor for ensuring long-term performance of expensive mechanical systems is to prevent water vapor from coming in contact with the pipe, duct or equipment surface at all times....

## Does Plastic Piping Need to be Insulated?
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/does-plastic-piping-need-to-be-insulated/
While well-known metallic piping types, such as copper and carbon steel, have been commercially available for many years, plastic piping has rapidly grown in popularity as an alternative to metallic piping due to its performance and economic benefits.
Depending on the plastic pipe type, plastic is approximately 25%-35% more thermally efficient than metallic piping. What this means is that plastic possesses a lower thermal conductivity (K-Value) than metals and reduces heat transfer between the fluid in the pipe and the surrounding air. Depending on the plastic pipe type and application, the pipe may not need to be insulated.
Some of the common plastic pipe types include Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC), Polypropylene (PP), Cross-Linked Polyethylene (PEX), Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), Polybutylene (PB), and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)....

## Tolerances of Closed Cell Elastomeric Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/tolerances-of-closed-cell-elastomeric-insulation/
Unlike traditional mechanical insulation materials, such as open-cell fibrous (fiberglass) and rigid closed-cell (cellular glass, phenolic, polyisocyanurate), closed cell elastomeric foam insulation is flexible and comprised of many encapsulated spheres of air within a synthetic rubber base.
The manufacture of flexible elastomeric foam insulation (also known as rubber) must comply with ASTM C534 Standard Specification for Preformed Flexible Elastomeric Cellular Thermal Insulation in Sheet and Tubular Form.
ASTM C534 specifies “dimensional tolerances” for Type I Tubular and Type II Sheet materials. For tubes, tolerances are published for the inside diameter (ID), wall thickness, and length; for sheets, length, width, and thickness.
The manufacturing process for closed cell elastomeric insulation must be incredibly precise to meet ASTM’s tight tolerances....

## Calculating R-Value AEROFLEX® EPDM™ Closed-Cell Elastomeric Foam Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/calculating-r-value-aeroflex-epdm-closed-cell-elastomeric-foam-insulation/
## WHY THERMAL INSULATION?
Mechanical insulation effectively reduces heat exchange between a pipe, duct, or equipment and its environment. An insulation’s thermal efficiency is measured by thermal conductivity (K-value). The lower the K-value, the more thermally efficient insulation is. For example, a K-value of 0.245 is preferable to .280.
## WHAT IS R-VALUE?
Thermal resistance to heat flow. The higher the number, the better. For example, an R-value of 8.2 is more thermally efficient than 7.1.
## HOW TO CALCULATE R-VALUE?

## Self-Seal Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/self-seal-pipe-insulation/
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that residential and commercial buildings in the United States account for 39% of total energy consumption (2019). Building mechanical systems, such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration and plumbing systems are designed to deliver thermal comfort, healthy ventilation (indoor air quality - IAQ), and water to building occupants. Think of building mechanical systems like the circulatory system of a building.
The EIA estimates that HVAC systems alone account for 49% of a commercial building’s electricity use. HVAC typically includes (not all-inclusive) steam, hot water, chilled water, and refrigeration systems with piping, ducts, tanks, vessels, and equipment.

## Compressive Strength of AEROFLEX EPDM™ Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/compressive-strength-of-aeroflex-epdm-insulation/
A common question that we receive about our EPDM elastomeric insulation is about its compressive strength (resistance).
ASTM C165 “Standard Test Method for Measuring Compressive Properties of Thermal Insulations” is applicable to rigid insulation types such as cellular glass, polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, phenolic, and polyimide for insulating mechanical system applications such as HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing.
According to ASTM C534 “Standard Specification for Preformed Flexible Elastomeric Cellular Thermal Insulation in Sheet and Tubular Form”, compressive strength/resistance is not referenced as a performance property for closed-cell elastomeric insulation.
For mechanical system applications such as HVAC, refrigeration & plumbing piping, ductwork and equipment, our focus is on core performance properties that are required by ASTM C534, such as thermal conductivity, maximum use temperature, surface burning characteristics, water vapor permeability/absorption, and...

## VRF/VRV Pipe Insulation Considerations
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/vrf-vrv-pipe-insulation-considerations/
VRF (variable refrigerant flow) and VRV (variable refrigerant volume) systems (VRF/VRV), also known as ductless or mini-split systems, are an innovative alternative to traditional HVAC systems that deliver thermal comfort to individual occupant spaces without ductwork. System benefits include increased energy efficiency, simultaneous heating and cooling, space conservation, design flexibility, and individual user controls.
Since these systems significantly reduce or eliminate ductwork, VRF/VRV piping tends to be very long and is most often routed through building spaces, some of which are difficult to access after installation. Keeping this in mind during the design stage is critical.
VRF/VRV pipe insulation system design is straightforward. Essentially, an outdoor condenser unit controls the amount of refrigerant flowing to individual interior evaporating units that heat or cool a building space....

## Freeze Protection of Pipes with Mechanical Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/freeze-protection-of-pipes-with-mechanical-pipe-insulation/
When pipes are exposed to freezing ambient temperatures, still fluids such as water will eventually freeze and cause system and property damage to the surrounding environment.
While mechanical pipe insulation can buy time and prolong fluids in pipes from freezing, it will not prevent fluids from freezing in piping systems.
For example, still water at 55ºF in a 6” IPS pipe insulated with 2” thick elastomeric insulation exposed to freezing temperatures of 0ºF will eventually freeze in approximately 23 hours. The length of time is determined by the variables noted above and the pipe insulation type. Insulation with lower thermal conductivity (K-value) will generally provide greater freeze protection.
To provide long-term freeze protection, a heat trace cable is recommended to be installed on the pipe and below the insulation. It’s important to note that the heat trace cable selected should be self-regulating and not exceed the maximum operating temperature of the pipe insulation....

## Cementitious Termination Points
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/cementitious-termination-points/
Pipe insulation runs, both horizonal and vertical, often terminate into cementitious substrates such as masonry block walls and concrete floors. While this technical bulletin addresses proper adhesion and sealing of Aeroflex USA’s AEROFLEX EPDM ™ closed-cell elastomeric insulation at termination points, it does not address, nor is intended to replace, proper firestopping standards, codes, and specifications.
When AEROFLEX ® insulation (tubes, sheets or rolls) terminates at cementitious substrates, it is critical to seal the insulation to the substrate in order to achieve a vapor seal. When properly sealed, moisture will not penetrate beneath the insulation so corrosion under insulation (CUI) and energy loss can be prevented.
To achieve a complete vapor seal, the following steps should be taken:
1. Clean cementitious surface so it is free of bond-breaking dust, sealers, and contaminants.
2. Ensure that the masonry surface is smooth; if high ridges exist (i.e....

## Why specify Indoor Advantage Gold™ insulation?
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/greenguard-gold-insulation-aeroflex/
Remember the term “sick building syndrome” or SBS? SBS occurs when building occupants experience acute health effects due to time spent in a building. Many times, these negative health effects go undiagnosed because they dissipate when the occupant leaves the building, but they reoccur when the occupant returns.
Symptoms can include difficulty with concentration, dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue, dry cough, eye, nose & throat irritation, dry itchy skin, and sensitivity to odors.
Some of the most common causes of SBS are:
• Biological contaminants - bacteria, mold, pollen, and viruses
• Poor ventilation
• Contaminants from indoor sources - adhesives, sealants, carpeting, manufactured wood products, furniture, cleaning agents, copy machines
• Contaminants from outdoor sources - air pollution
Since 1984 when the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 30% of buildings worldwide were subject to indoor air quality (IAQ) issues, the building industry has come a...

## Listed & Labeled
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/listed-labeled/
The 2018 edition of the International Mechanical Code® added new language and requirements for duct insulation coverings (wrap) and linings (liner), including adhesives, contained within plenums.
Within Section 604.3 Insulation Coverings and Linings, the new requirement states that duct insulation and adhesives must be “listed and labeled.” What exactly does this mean?
Duct Insulation must pass either ASTM E84 or UL723 25/50 flame spread (< 25) and smoke- developed (< 50) indexes. This requirement is not new.
What’s new is that duct insulation manufacturers must engage with an OSHA-approved nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) for initial and periodic (quarterly) testing/surveillance to ensure that their duct insulation passes ASTM E84 or UL723 perpetually.
Once a duct insulation and adhesive passes 25/50, the manufacturer’s products are publicly listed on the NRTL’s online product directory. This is the definition of “listed”....

## What to Look for in HVAC Refrigerant Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/what-to-look-for-in-hvac-refrigerant-pipe-insulation/
HVAC refrigerant pipe insulation is a critical component of a well-designed refrigeration system to achieve long-term performance and life cycle costs for building owners.
Refrigeration systems are demanding and generally operate continuously with the potential for downtime to be minimized. While every refrigeration system has its own set of unique requirements, they all have two enemies – condensation and vapor drive. The right HVAC refrigerant pipe insulation, when correctly specified and installed, can control these two constant threats.
Commercial and industrial refrigeration systems typically operate in the 20°F to -50°F (ammonia) range. These continuous service temperatures are below-ambient and a constant target of condensation and vapor drive. Additionally, hot gas defrost cycles can reach intermittent spikes of 250°F....

## Closed Cell Elastomeric Insulation Can Protect Pipes From Moisture And Mold
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/closed-cell-elastomeric-insulation/
Closed cell elastomeric insulation can be more costly than other forms of well-known mechanical insulation types such as fiberglass. With this information, it makes sense to ask why anyone should choose elastomeric insulation over other available insulation types. The answers can be broken down into a few key categories, all geared towards protecting the usability and longevity of your insulation projects.
## Moisture protection
All insulation types run some risk of moisture damage, but closed cell elastomeric insulation can prevent equipment damage—both physical and moisture-based—better than others. Elastomeric insulation has a water vapor permeability of wvp 0.03 and a closed-cell structure that makes damage less likely. Its natural ability to repel moisture because of its closed-cell structure means reduced odds of moisture damage such as corrosion under insulation (CUI). One particular closed cell elastomeric insulation is able to reach the wvp of ≤ 0....

## Why a Mechanical System Should be Shut Down Prior to and During the Installation of Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/why-a-mechanical-system-should-be-shut-down-prior-to-and-during-the-installation-of-insulation/
It's understandable when building owners object to shutting down existing mechanical piping, equipment, and duct systems for maintenance in their facilities. There is a direct correlation between downtime and lost revenue.
While the lost revenue (cost) of a system shutdown is short term, the long-term cost of delayed system maintenance can add up quickly and eventually surpass short-term costs.
Existing mechanical insulation systems that are compromised due to missing insulation, insufficient thickness, mechanical damage, moisture infiltration, and mold growth lead to heat loss/gain, process inefficiencies, unnecessary loads on expensive equipment, and personnel safety hazards.
For below-ambient (cold) systems, the primary concern with insulating an operating system during installation is the naturally occurring formation of condensation on the outer surface of the mechanical component to be insulated....

## Need To Know - Installing Closed Cell Elastomeric Insulation in Exterior Applications
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/need-to-know-installing-closed-cell-elastomeric-insulation-in-exterior-applications/
The need for UV resistant refrigerant line insulation is common for installations on building exteriors, such as rooftops, to convey refrigerants between large roof-top HVAC systems and interior equipment to provide conditioned air to the building’s occupant spaces and equipment.
U.S. commercial energy codes and standards, such as ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, International Energy Conservation Code® (IECC®), require refrigerant lines to be insulated. The codes and standards do specify the UV resistant refrigerant line insulation thickness based on pipe size and line temperature, however, they do not specify the insulation type.
The energy codes and standards referenced above also require “protection from damage” when UV resistant refrigerant line insulation will be exposed to the weather. Factors that can damage refrigerant line insulation include sunlight, moisture, severe weather, equipment maintenance, varmints, and birds....

## Guide to Mold Resistant Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/guide-to-mold-resistant-insulation/
Mold resistant insulation is an important consideration to prevent the dangers of mold.
Molds present in different colors on surfaces such as white, black, red, orange, and gray. Black is indicative of mold that has eaten down below the surface of the material and is often the most difficult to remove.
It has been well documented that mold growth causes toxic risks to human health such as headaches, breathing difficulties, allergic and irritant reactions, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and opportunistic infections....

## The Case for Plumbing Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/the-case-for-plumbing-pipe-insulation/
The most important contributions that plumbing pipe insulation can deliver for domestic hot and cold water piping systems are energy conservation, condensation control, and freeze protection.
National model energy standards, such as ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 – Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and the International Energy Conservation Code® (IECC®), actually require minimum insulation thicknesses for heating and hot water piping from 105°F and above. The minimum insulation thickness is determined by the line (service or operating) temperature and nominal pipe or tube size. It’s been documented that pipe insulation can reduce heat loss by preserving hot water temperatures by 2°F – 4°F when compared to uninsulated hot water pipes.
National energy standards also require minimum pipe insulation thicknesses for cold water systems, such as domestic cold water piping, to prevent heat gain while controlling condensation....

## Stretch-Outs for Jacketing AEROFLEX EPDM[TM] Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/stretch-outs-for-jacketing-aeroflex-epdmtm-pipe-insulation/
#### AEROFLEX EPDM™ Pipe Insulation is often jacketed with materials such as metal and PVC to provide mechanical protection and/or a supplemental vapor barrier.
To calculate to correct jacket size to properly fit over AEROFLEX® pipe insulation, insulation contractors need to know either the outside diameter (OD) of our pipe insulation or the “stretch-out” by pipe size for a given project. A stretch-out measures the outer circumference of the pipe insulation tube.
It’s important to understand that ASTM International allows insulation manufacturers dimensional “tolerances”. In the case of pipe insulation, a tolerance is allowed for the inside diameter (ID) and insulation thickness by insulation type. Manufacturers usually determine minimum, target, and maximum tolerances or a tolerance range.
AEROFLEX® OD’s and Stretch-Out measurements are calculated using both maximum ID’s and wall thicknesses in an effort to prevent jacketing from being fabricated short....

## Condensation Control | A Design Requirement for Below-Ambient (Cold) Mechanical Systems
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/condensation-control-a-design-requirement-for-below-ambient-cold-mechanical-systems/
Since water vapor will always be present within the building envelope, it is imperative to adequately protect building mechanical systems (piping, ductwork, and equipment) from the undesirable effects of excess moisture. If left unchecked, uncontrolled water vapor can create a domino effect – vapor drive, condensation, decreased energy efficiency, the potential for mold growth, corrosion, damage to expensive equipment and building components, slip/fall hazards, and eventual system failure/shut down.

## How to Choose the Best Plenum-Rated Pipe and Duct Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/plenum-rated-pipe-and-duct-insulation-defined/
Plenum spaces in buildings are designed to discreetly house building systems such as HVAC equipment & return airflow, pipe runs, and digital cables. Although air plenums are typically out-of-sight, typically located above ceiling grids or in under-floor systems, mechanical design (i.e. plenum rated insulation) are critically important to ensure the safety of building occupants and the building itself.
Since air plenums house HVAC systems that require airflow, they present an oxygen-rich environment in which fire and smoke has the potential to spread through the plenum and into occupant spaces (through ductwork for example) risking life safety. It’s critical that building materials installed within building air plenums, such as plenum rated insulation, suppress and do not propagate flame spread and smoke development.

## Bonding AEROFLEX EPDM™ to Calcium Silicate and Phenolic Pipe Supports
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/bonding-aeroflex-epdm-to-calcium-silicate-and-phenolic-pipe-supports/
Rigid calcium silicate (calsil) and phenolic pipe supports are commonly specified and installed as a component of insulated mechanical piping systems at hanger, strut, and pipe rack locations. Pipe supports prevent insulation from being crushed by piping under live active loads.
Whenever possible, Aeroflex USA recommends Aerofix® Insulated Pipe Supports with our EPDM pipe insulation as part of a warranted “closed-cell” AEROFLEX® system.
However, we partnered with Thermal Pipe Shields (TPS) to test the adhesion performance of AEROFLEX Aeroseal and Aeroseal LVOC™ Black Adhesives with TPS’s calsil and phenolic supports.
When TPS calsil or phenolic pipe supports are specified to be installed with AEROFLEX EPDM, the following procedures should be followed when sealing the two materials together at the circumferential seams:
• Thoroughly clean and remove dust from sides of calsil and phenolic supports with denatured alcohol
• Apply thin primer coat of Aeroseal or Aeroseal LVOC™...

## Nesting Chart (Copper) for AEROFLEX EPDM™ Pipe Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/nesting-chart-copper-for-aeroflex-epdm-pipe-insulation/
Certain HVAC, refrigeration and plumbing pipe insulation applications require more than a single layer of AEROFLEX EPDM ™ flexible elastomeric insulation to control condensation in demanding conditions such as a cold line temperature in a hot and humid operating environment. Our “nesting” chart offers the best fit for installing an additional layer (sleeving) over the most common copper and iron pipe insulation sizes. It’s important to note that Aeroflex USA tests 1”, 1-1/2” and 2” thicknesses for ASTM E84 25/50 flame/smoke compliance. We do not test other thickness combinations, and thicknesses over 2” will not pass ASTM E84.

## The Important of a Perm Rating
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/the-important-of-a-perm-rating/
An often overlooked technical performance characteristic of mechanical pipe and equipment insulation is water vapor permeability (WVP). ASTM International defines WVP as “the time rate of water vapor transmission through unit area of flat material of unit thickness induced by unit vapor pressure difference between two specific surfaces, under specified temperature and humidity conditions."
A primary purpose of mechanical insulation on below-ambient (low-temperature) pipe & equipment systems, such as chilled water and refrigeration, is to prevent heat gain, control condensation, and minimize the risk for corrosion under insulation (CUI). Water vapor will naturally attempt to drive through insulation to the cold pipe surface. This phenomenon is also known as “vapor drive”.
The ability of an insulation material to resist water vapor transmission is reported as a “perm rating” in Inch-Pound (English) or SI (International) units. For example, English perm ratings are published as 0....

## Heat Trace Systems with AEROFLEX® EPDM™ Closed Cell Elastomeric Insulation
URL: https://aeroflexusa.com/heat-trace-systems-with-aeroflex-epdm-closed-cell-elastomeric-insulation/
With frigid arctic winter blasts on the increase in the United States, property damage caused by frozen pipes runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Property owners and property insurance owners are negatively impacted. In December 2022, cities such as Jackson, MS and Chaleston, SC experienced record-low temperatures, pipe bursts, and boil-water advisories.
In general, pipes are subjected to freezing at ambient temperatures of 20°F or below. When standing water freezes in a pipe, it expands and causes the pipe to burst and ultimately leak. Pipe leaks also result in reduced water pressure to water municipalities and districts.
For residential home and commercial building owners, frozen pipes can result in significant damage to interior building components and equipment. The cost of operational downtime in a commercial or industrial environment cannot be overlooked....
