EPDM rubber compound is formulated in specific grades for numerous commercial and industrial uses. Each grade offers trade-offs when it comes to HVAC/R and Plumbing applications – differing performance characteristic such as thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability, and upper continuous operating temperature limits.
AEROFLEX EPDM™ closed-cell elastomeric pipe insulation is engineered for a continuous upper operating temperature of 257ºF/125ºC. We are often asked if AEROFLEX is rated for 300ºF/150ºC applications.
Aeroflex USA has tested and approved the following AEROFLEX® product lines for piping applications with intermittent operating temperatures up to 300ºF/150ºC, for up to 30 minutes, within a 24-hour period (daily or periodic):
- AEROFLEX Self-Seal™ and LDP™ Pipe Insulation
- AEROFLEX EPDM™ Standard Tubes
- AEROFLEX®-EP (FM Approved) Pipe Insulation
- AEROFLEX EPDM™ Continuous Tubes
- AEROFLEX® White/Gray Standard & Self-Seal Tubes
- AeroFit™ EPDM Insulation Fittings
- Aerofix® Insulated Pipe Supports
- Aeroseal Adhesive
- Aeroseal LVOC™ Black Adhesive
- REF 1520™ Adhesive
This approval does not apply to AEROFLEX EPDM Sheets, Rolls, or Breathe-EZ Duct Insulation on piping, ductwork, and equipment. The reason for this position is that our adhesives are rated up to 180ºF/82ºC for full spread, 257ºF/125ºC for seams, and PSA to 240ºF/115ºC.
This limitation also applies to sheets & rolls installed over large piping with glued seams only. The seams will likely soften and pull apart due to tension from the weight of rolls.
