What is GREENGUARD Gold Certification?

What is GREENGUARD Certification and why is it important? UL Solutions developed the
GREENGUARD Certification program as a testing & certification solution towards improving indoor
air quality for residential and commercial indoor environments.

It is well documented that there can be hundreds of airborne chemicals, known as volatile organic
compounds (VOC’s), present in the indoor air of a typical home or commercial building. Interior
finishes such as flooring, carpet, paint, furniture, building materials, and cleaning products are
common sources of VOC’s. VOC’s can negatively affect human health and wellbeing.

There are two levels of UL GREENGUARD Certification that measure VOC emissions:

  1. UL GREENGUARD Certification: establishes standard VOC emission limits for furniture and
    commercial building products.
  2. UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification: added health-based criteria with lower total VOC (TVOC)
emission levels of over 360 VOC’s in sensitive indoor environments such as schools and healthcare
facilities. Must comply with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method for the
Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from the Indoor Sources Using
Environmental Chambers, also known as California Section 01350.

Building materials, including thermal insulation, that are GREENGUARD Gold Certified can
contribute to LEED® EQ Credit: Low-Emitting Materials.

GREENGUARD Certified products for low chemical emissions must undergo annual surveillance by
UL Solutions to ensure ongoing compliance.

Most AEROFLEX EPDM™ closed-cell elastomeric insulation and accessory products are
GREENGUARD Gold Certified and can contribute to low chemical emissions for healthy indoor
environments. To learn more, click here.
