Stretch-Outs for Jacketing AEROFLEX EPDM[TM] Pipe Insulation

AEROFLEX EPDM™ Pipe Insulation is often jacketed with materials such as metal and PVC to provide mechanical protection and/or a supplemental vapor barrier.

To calculate to correct jacket size to properly fit over AEROFLEX® pipe insulation, insulation contractors need to know either the outside diameter (OD) of our pipe insulation or the “stretch-out” by pipe size for a given project. A stretch-out measures the outer circumference of the pipe insulation tube.

It’s important to understand that ASTM International allows insulation manufacturers dimensional “tolerances”. In the case of pipe insulation, a tolerance is allowed for the inside diameter (ID) and insulation thickness by insulation type. Manufacturers usually determine minimum, target, and maximum tolerances or a tolerance range.

AEROFLEX® OD’s and Stretch-Out measurements are calculated using both maximum ID’s and wall thicknesses in an effort to prevent jacketing from being fabricated short. Although the outer circumference of the actual pipe insulation may be slightly smaller, the intent of “max-max” measurements is to prevent the jacketing from compressing the insulation.
